9 genuinely useful ideas for a small living room (not magazine clichés)

1–3: The dimension trio (1) The rug should tuck under the sofa's front legs — a small rug shrinks the room. (2) Coffee tables should sit 5 cm below the armrest. (3) Viewing distance is 1.6× screen size; in a small room 43–50 inches is plenty — big screens eat the space.

4–6: Eye-level games (4) Hang curtains from the ceiling, not the window frame — perceived height jumps. (5) Split lighting into three layers: ceiling (ambient), floor lamp (mid), task spots. A single chandelier is the most common small-room mistake. (6) Hang art 5 cm above eye level; small works hung high make the wall look cluttered.

7–9: Furniture choices (7) Choose seats on slim metal legs so the floor stays visible — the room breathes. (8) Anchor any storage above 40 cm to the wall; freestanding tall pieces close the room in.
